Gardening can be very rewarding – or so I’ve heard.

A trick that an enthusiastic friend of mine shared with me seemed too good to not pass along.

You don’t need a lot of space or even ground to so some gardening – maybe favorite flowers or herbs or smaller fruit bearing plants like strawberries.

This tip can help deal with 2 problems modern dwellers have.

Whenever we buy electronic and other products, there’s the matter of the styrofoam packaging.

A gardener friend of mine – an over enthusiastic achiever types who has garden areas in her yard as well as container planting – shared this tip:

Instead of land-filling the styrofoam, break it into smaller pieces from fist sized to thumbs sized. Well depending on the planter size.

Fill the bottom 1/3 to 1/2 of a planter container with the broken styrofoam chunks.

This provides drainage for the plants to prevent root rot, and allows you to use less potting soil.

The best part is the styrofoam is a lot lighter than using rocks in the bottom for this purpose, so has the added advantage of letting you re-arrange and move the pots around a lot easier.

And you have to get rid of the styrofoam anyway. Because who really has the storage space to hang into the inside packaging for as long as you have the electronic device….
